Hello all, I have come to bow down and ask my first question because I am stumped.

I am helping a friend with his 1949 Chevrolet 3100, It came in as a no charge.
After a few tests I came to the conclusion it needed a voltage regulator.
I replaced it with a Standard brand regulator, I now have voltage to the regulator but cannot get the field coil to energize on its own?
If I manually energize it, it will hold for an extended period of time, but once it disconnects it goes back to just arching?

I have cleaned the grounds from battery to frame to engine. I could not locate the cab ground so I ran a ground to the voltage regulator body, still nothing.

Once energized it performs as should?

I know this is probably simple and I am just not thinking , but I've pulled my hair out and now I am here?

You will need a multimeter to make a few tests. An old analogue meter is best. Measure on the regulator connections with the genny wires connected between the gen and field terminal. This should show zero ohms. Disconnect the field terminal and measure between the field connection and earth. This measures the field coil resistance and should be about 3 ohms. These tests show the regulator is configuring the field correctly and the field coil works.

Thanks for the response, I do not have an analog meter but with my Fluke. I measured from field terminal of generator to field terminal of regulator and got 0.1 I then disconnected field wire from regulator and measured between that terminal and ground, I got 0.3?

In case I understood wrong I also measured between field and armature terminals on the regulator and got 1.0

Your measurements show genny and regulator are ok. When you run the engine you should get a voltage reading on the armature connection of the regulator to ground.You should also be able to measure the battery voltage to ground on the regulator terminal Bat or B

Replaced voltage regulator again and everything working as it should.
