I recently acquired a 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster that is in great original shape. It's been stored for 20 years and so I've been reconditioning it for the road. New brakes, etc. The trunk lid is quite heavy, and I want to know if the support rod is supposed to have a spring or some such to support the weight while it is lifted, as the engine hood does. If it slips from your hand while lifting it could knock you out! The latch/rod does work so it stays in the 'up' position once I've elevated it enough. But it is a heavy lift getting it all the way up.
no luck finding the spring at chevs of the 40's or filling station.
Can anyone post a picture of what the truck support arm spring looks like and where it mounts? Is it a flat coil spring mounted on one end of the lid support arm/pawl? Mine is completely missing.
No spring to help lift it. What you have is all their is. The support rod catches to hold it up once you lift it all the way open. Raise it a little more and it releases so you can let it down. That's it.
The support does not assist you is raising the ld, it olt supports the lid when it is all the wAY UP. i WOULD SUGGEST REMOVING THE SUPPORT AND DISASSEMBLE THE UNIT AND CHECK FOR BROKEN SPRING OR IF THE WORKING PIECES ARE STUCK.
