I was looking through some items on eBay this morning and saw some 12 volt to 6 volt voltage reducers. Is it possible to jump star our 6 volt cars from a 12 volt source if there is a voltage reducer before our battery? The flow would be 12 volt battery to jumper cables, jumper cables to voltage reducer, voltage reducer to 6 volt battery. It may not work - just curious. Thanks for any insights you might have!

I have jumped dozens of 6 volt cars with a 12 volt jumper box with no problems. In fact it is a plus with the 12 volts because it spins over faster. Cautions are make sure all lights aand radio are shut of and don't crank for ;ong periods of time and/or allow the starter to cool.

I had heard that you could damage the points pretty easily if you jump with 12 volts.? Is that just an "old wife's tale"?

yes, It will not damage the points any more than it would damage the points with a 12 volt system. On a 12 volt car the points will get 12 volts during starting and when the starter button is released and the engine running the points get reduced voltage through a resistor or resistance wiiring.
