HI I just replaced the gears in my transmission (from spur gears to bevel) my new rear bearing is sealed on one side . My repair manual schematic shows the seal to trans side is this correct? Also I found 2 shims and 1 gasket between the u joint and trans case . What clearance do these control ?

The transmission side of the bearing needs to be open. That is how oil gets to the bearing. The original bearing had no seals, just a slinger.
The shims control the fit of the bell shield to prevent leakage. Your shop manual tells you how to adjust that.

RUSTY The shims i am referring to are the ones between the front u-joint housing (casting) and the transmission housing (casting) not the u-joint ball shims

The shop manual states to install the seal side of thr bearing to the transmissio side - which would be to the front.

My guess is to prevent excessive amounts of the gear oil from enteing the rear of the case but rather have it being metered as designed. The gear oil still gets back there but a controled amount.
