1966 Caprice with a 327/poweglide dies only when shifted into reverse. However it also has the timing set to 31 at idle! I’m new to the car so I’m trying to work out these things. When I adjusted the timing down to something closer to factory spec it doesn’t run well (brought it down to 8). I’m hoping there’s some knowledge here that can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Possible stretched or improperly installed timing chain.

Also possible the timing cover and/or pulley have been changed and the timing marks don't register with each properly.
Maybe?

If it was my car I would pull the radiator, balancer and timing chain cover and investigate.
Are you checking the tiiming with the vacumm hose disconnected?

Vacuum hose disconnected when I check timing. But great info here and looks like I have investigating to do. Thanks.
