Hi Guys,

I'm reassembling my '32 Confederate after it's brief, catastrophic post-rebuild engine runs, and cannot locate the hold down bolt spring for the distributor.

Anyone got the specs on this spring assembly, or knowledge of where to buy it? I don't see it for sale at the Filling Station.

Even a picture would be great, as I do not remember what it looks like.

Thanks!

Are you referring to the spring on the screw that goes into the boss on the block on the arm ??
if so it is part no 821599 it is a simple compression spring nothing fancy i can measure one on my car if needed.

below are a few picts for reference.

sure Chipper or someone may have one if you want an authentic one wink

I suggest going to your local hardware store and finding a spring that will fit.

Thanks!

Interesting. That is a different style slotted bolt than is in mine. Mine is threaded all the way to the head, and can therefore not be tightened down onto a spring.

What's that type of screw called?

They are shoulder bolts. You can use regular bolts with a sleeve. Make sleeve from tubing that fits the bolt shank closely and has the correct OD. Or you can turn down and rethrea if you can't find the correct one.

It is a shoulder bolt made special by GM for this application. A washer with a inner diameter a little larger then shoulder would go under spring. When bolt is tightened down againist the block it puts a little spring tension on distributor clamp and still let it move to advance timing.

So I followed Chippers advice and went to my local hardware store and assembled the proper bolt and spring. Then I cut some tubing and found appropriate washers, and made a working model.

The next 3 hours were spent trying to thread a spring-loaded bolt into a hole I could neither see nor get a tool on. It took experimentation (tried forceps, needle nose pliers, etc) and much creative cursing before I lucked it into the threads.

As always, thanks for your help. I'm aiming for the end of the month for my next test run of the new engine.
